What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, typically starting in a woman’s 40s. During this time, hormonal fluctuations can lead to symptoms like irregular periods, mood swings, and hot flushes. It marks the end of the reproductive years, culminating in menopause when menstruation ceases entirely.

What can naturopathy do for perimenopause symptoms?

Naturopathic treatment for perimenopause focuses on holistic approaches. It may include herbal remedies, dietary changes, stress management, and lifestyle adjustments. Naturopathic methods aim to balance hormones, alleviate symptoms, and support overall well-being during this transitional phase.

Consultation with a naturopath can provide personalised strategies tailored to your specific symptoms and needs.

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?

As mentioned, perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, typically starting in a woman’s 40s. During perimenopause, hormonal fluctuations cause symptoms like irregular periods, brain fog and hot flushes. Menopause officially occurs when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months, usually around the age of 50 years, although there can be variations to this from person to person. After menopause, the body undergoes further adjustments, the brain and body recalibrate to the new, much lower, levels of hormones and symptoms like hot flushes and brain fog tend to diminish.

What happens to our hormones in the perimenopause transition?

During perimenopause, hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, fluctuate as the body adjusts to the approaching menopausal stage. These fluctuations can result in various symptoms due to the ovaries producing hormones inconsistently. Key hormonal changes include:

  • Estrogen Fluctuations: Estrogen levels may rise and fall unevenly, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and various symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances.
  • Progesterone Decline: Progesterone, another important female hormone, often decreases during perimenopause. This can contribute to changes in the menstrual cycle and impact mood.
  • Testosterone Changes: While often associated with males, testosterone levels in females also decrease during perimenopause. This can affect energy levels, libido, and overall well-being.

Understanding these hormonal shifts is crucial in managing perimenopausal symptoms. Working with a Naturopath who can provide guidance and support tailored to your individual needs could be just what you are looking for.
